Salary : $106,600.00 - $128,044.80 Annually Location : CA, CA Job Type: Part Time or Full -Time Job Number: 202400034 Department: Court Operations Opening Date: 01/14/2025 Description As a Court Reporter for the Superior Court of California, Napa County you will be responsible for producing the verbatim record of all testimony and proceedings heard before the Superior Court. Courtroom assignments are made on a weekly rotational basis, and we do expect our Court Reporters to be onsite between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday. We have pay differential for those with Real Time certification and an amazing benefits package. You must be certified by the State of California as a Certified Shorthand Reporter and have your own stenography machine. We are offering a signing bonus of $10,000! This amount will be paid in three annual installments after the completion of your probationary period.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent in this classification must be certified by the State of California as a Certified Shorthand Reporter in accordance with Government Code Section 69941 and 72194

SUPERVISION

Receives direction from supervisory and/or management staff. No supervision is exercised over others. Examples of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Attend sessions of the Court as assigned and compile a verbatim official record of all courtroom proceedings in machine shorthand. Read back previously spoken testimony to judges, counsel, witnesses and jurors during court proceedings, to judges in chambers and to jurors during deliberations. Prepare a transcripts of all or part of the court record in the format prescribed by the Court upon proper request of the parties or order of the Court and certify final transcripts. Operate computer-aided or manual transcription equipment to prepare transcripts; may also operate real-time court reporting equipment during court proceedings. Store, deliver and preserve reporting notes as official records of the Court in accordance with the provisions of Government Code Section 69955. Transcribe verbatim notes in typewritten form meeting prescribed deadlines. Proofread, collate, bind and deliver completed transcripts as required. Prepare excerpts of testimony in typed form as requested for verification of elements of testimony or argument. Research and prepare transcripts from past proceedings at the request of the Court, counsel, governmental agencies and litigants. Perform basic legal and office file research to ensure appropriate case documentation of names, quotations and similar information. Maintain record and prepare basic reports related to work performed. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge of : California Statutes relating to court reporting services. Legal, medical and other technical terminology utilized during the course of court proceedings. Use of, adjustment and minor maintenance of stenographic and similar equipment related to work. Computer equipment and data processing programs. Courtroom practices and procedures. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Current trends, practices and developments in court reporting technology. Ability to: Take verbatim dictation of courtroom and related proceedings at a rate certified to perform the work. Read back the court record in open court. Transcribe such information accurately. Conduct basic legal and related research to verify transcribed information. Maintain attention to detail, organizing and prioritizing work and meet critical time deadlines. Maintain accurate records of work performed. Type accurately and operate a personal computer and other types of modern office equipment. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Adapt to changing court reporting technology, including but not limited to, real time reporting. Maintain confidential information where legal standards so require. Hear and distinguish words spoken in varying tones and volumes. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work, including judges, professional and clerical staff and the general public. Typical Qualifications To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is: Experience None required. The ability to utilize real-time reporting as directed by the court and one year experience as a court reporter in a court of law is highly desired. Education Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade. License or Certificate Possess and maintain a certificate and be in good standing as a Certified Shorthand Reporter issued by the Court Reporters Board of California or evidence of successful testing in accordance with Government Code Section 69942. Benefits listed for full time employee. Benefits for a part time employee will be pro-rated based on part-time status of employee. Real Time Differential: 6% differential to Court Reporters with national certification who meet the Court's established real-time capable requirement and who are performing real-time court reporting in the Napa Court. 3% differential to Court Reporters who meet the Court's established real-time capable requirement and who are performing real-time court reporting in the Napa Court.
